The A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland is seeking a Research Lab Manager to spearhead the operations of the newly formed Maryland Autonomous Technologies Research and Innovation and eXploration (MATRIX) Lab at University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM). Reporting to the Director of Research Innovation and Outreach, the Lab Manager is responsible for the execution of the Director’s strategic plan for all operations in the MATRIX.

The Research Lab Manager manages and supports the administration and operations of the research labs in the new Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building at USMSM. Serving as the expert for the research facility and the equipment for the Clark School at the MATRIX, the position actively works with researchers and students from academia, and industry and government agencies to ensure safe operation of equipment, provide additional skills instruction, and advise on research design and construction, including issues such as selection of components and applications.

The Research Lab Manager supports research activities across the USMSM campus by working with researchers to help design and then fabricate components for various applications. In addition to the MATRIX, the Lab Manager works with the education component of the SMART Building and supporting their lab manager and equipment and facilities. The position coordinates and supports academic courses and extracurricular projects that utilize the MATRIX and hires, trains, and oversees a variety of graduate and undergraduate research assistants/students.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently work near moving mechanical parts and exposed dusty surfaces, toxic or non-toxic chemicals, and odorous environments.
  • Noise level in the work environment can be loud.
  • Work is conducted near electrical circuits, use of measuring instruments on live electrical circuits requires dexterity and caution.
  • Use of research equipment extends to the outdoor environment where conditions may be cold, hot, humid and/or windy, and on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, as needed.
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects.
  • Must have correctable vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for extended times.
  • Availability to work non-traditional hours including some weekends, early mornings, and late evenings, as necessary.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a technology industry OR
  • Associate’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in a technology industry


  • Experience in the use and maintenance of machine tools and prototyping equipment including, but not limited to hand tools, power tools, CNC milling machines, and/or 3D printers.
  • Advanced experience using Solidworks, MasterCam, and/or CAD/CAM software.
  • Previous experience with, and knowledge of, mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to execute multiple projects, meet scheduled milestones, and meet deliverables on time with high quality outputs.
  • Experience establishing and implementing safety and training procedures.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and oral and written presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyze and adapt to ambiguous situations, develop plans, and ensure successful and efficient implementation.
  • Strong skills to build and maintain working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and complex environment.
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office tools.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Breadth in skills and/or experience across multiple disciplines of engineering.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with students in either formal and /or informal settings to train them to safely and effectively use machine tools and research equipment including, including, such as hand tools, power tools, drill presses, band saws, lathes, knee mills, CNC milling machines, TIG welding, woodworking, water-jet cutting, 3D printers, laser cutters, and/or others.
  • Experience in a college/university setting, preferably in a student or research shop.
  • Experience in the design and fabrication of research apparatus based on verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize work and handle multiple requests simultaneously from a broad range of customers.
  • Experience tracking or managing a budget.
