The Irrigation Technician I performs skilled work primarily related to the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems for the Town, ensuring water efficiency and water conservation.  The Irrigation Technician I rebuilds, retrofits and maintains the Town’s irrigation systems.. This position receives general technical direction from the Irrigation Technician II & III. The Irrigation Technician I reports directly to the Irrigation Foreman.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all- encompassing.  The Town may change these duties at any time.

  • Proactively inspects and identifies potential problems in the landscape ecosystem to prevent damage or diminished quality to the infrastructure
  • Supports maintenance and repair activities by ensuring a clear understanding of daily goals, objectives, and plans
  • Regulates irrigation system programming cycles for appropriate settings based on the time of year, water requirements for plant species and with consideration of prevailing weather conditions; operates with the understanding and in compliance with all local regulations and restrictions
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses project requirements to repair existing irrigation systems
  • Assists with detailed inspections and compiles historical data on system design, water usage, precipitation rates, controller and controller schedules, valves, heads, and other relevant information
  • Participates in projects that may include working with outside contractors engaged in specialty or large projects
  • Continually develops and recommends improved work methods and standards
  • Participates in diagnostics training ensure consistent proficiencies with the safe operation of equipment, attention-to-detail and quality
  • Assists with installation of new irrigation systems, while applying and meeting best management practices
  • Inspects systems to determine distribution uniformity, nature of breaks and adjustments as necessary, meeting manufacturers recommended installation and maintenance requirements
  • Uses local and internet-based software to centrally control irrigation operations.
  • Maintains logs and maintenance records, inventory and equipment needed for maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Completes basic calculations for required zone GPM and pipe sizing as needed for Town developed and installed irrigation system expansion
  • Operates both light and heavy equipment
  • Collaborates with the GIS department and Town’s irrigation contractor when warranted.
  • Partners with the Parks Division, specifically the Parks Foreman
  • May assist with semi-skilled building construction and maintenance duties relating to the renovation, upkeep and operation of Town buildings and facilities
  • May assist in repairing plumbing, replacing broken fixtures, fixing leaks, cleaning stopped drains
  • May assist in the repair and maintenance of lights, fixtures, wiring, breaker boxes, and electrical switches
  • Actively promotes a culture of safety by observing and following all Town and Department safety procedures, regulations and policies and assists in ensuring others do so in order to promote a safe work environment and prevent injuries and illnesses
  • May work in confined spaces that require ventilation to protect against potential noxious gases and fumes
  • May be required to work overtime, be on-call and/or work a varying schedule including weekends during emergency situations and at the direction of the Director of Public Works or his/her designee
  • May assist the Irrigation Technician II and III with facilities maintenance work orders
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of small engine machinery
  • Knowledge of proper safety protocols when dealing with small engine and heavy machinery
  • Skilled at reading and recording numerical data
  • Experience with fusion/glue fittings with pipe and sweat fittings with copper pipe
  • Ability to recognize problems in parks and open space (broken sprinkler heads, leaking valve boxes, spray adjustments, etc.)
  • Knowledge of herbicides and insecticides
  • Understanding of backflow preventers, sensors and controllers
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules
  • Ability to effectively interact with the general public
  • Ability and willingness to keep equipment and workplace clean, serviced and organized
  • Ability to complete daily operations in a competent and safe manner
  • Ability to take care of Town-owned assets without constant supervision
  • Proficiency with basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office

  Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • At least one (1) year of experience in landscape irrigation or the commercial landscape maintenance industry is preferred
  • Experience with or knowledge of pumps/pumping station for irrigation, water mains, or other similar systems is preferred
  • Previous experience with internet-based irrigation controls and/or central controls, Evapotranspiration (ET) controls; knowledge of two wire controller systems is preferred
  • Previous experience with non-potable irrigation systems is preferred
  • Previous experience working in a maintenance position supporting external customers is preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and safe driving record throughout employment
  • Backflow certification and CIT or CLIA certification required or must be obtained within in one (1) year

Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Peripheral vision and Ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, or kneel.  Frequent driving of a variety of motor vehicles. Required to be available and on-call at various hours.

 Body Movement:

Walk, stand, stoop, bend, climb and sit while performing duties. Repetitive hand movement while keyboarding and writing.


Uses sight in the normal range with or without correction to perform duties.


Uses hearing in the normal range with or without correction to perform duties.
