The Whitehead Institute is seeking a highly motivated Manager/Director to lead the Institute’s new state-of-the-art Quantitative Proteomics Facility.

The Whitehead Institute is seeking a highly motivated Manager/Director to lead the Institute’s new state-of-the-art Quantitative Proteomics Facility. The Manager/Director will coordinate the development and implementation of cutting-edge mass spectrometry approaches to address diverse questions in biomedical research. They will collaborate with and advise scientists at Whitehead and the broader community on the effective application of innovative methods in quantitative proteomics to advance their research. To this end, they will oversee all core facility operations including acquisition and maintenance of equipment and affiliated software and peripherals, development of protocols, training of facility users, safety, inventory and ordering of supplies, data management, and oversight of facility staff. Billing, accounting, and other administrative responsibilities will receive the support of the Administrative Lab Manager for Core Facilities. All duties will be performed in accordance with Whitehead Institute’s behavioral standards, mission, values, and vision.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Provide consultation on experimental design, method development, and data analysis to users of the facility.
  • Prepare, review and revise written training materials, policies and protocols.
  • Provide expert technical assistance in sample preparation, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and data analysis for quantitative applications in proteomics including the identification proteins in complex samples and measurement of abundances, isoforms, and post-translational modifications.
  • Perform demos and facility tours as needed.
  • Remain current with trends, equipment and software in the field through reading, attending seminars, trade shows and visits to other core facilities.
  • Attend and participate in one related professional conference on an annual basis.
  • Proactively consider ways to improve the facility service and operations to provide the highest quality mass spectrometry support and service to the community. Welcome customer feedback and take follow-up action to enhance and improve services as needed.
  • Participate in grant writing to enhance the facility and support its use by the community.
  • Optimize the use of instrumentation, monitor and document performance, and troubleshoot instruments and associated peripherals.
  • Interact with vendors and engineers, and manage service calls and repairs as necessary.
  • Maintain software licenses, train and assist users with the analysis of their data.
  • Organize and maintain servers used by the facility in collaboration with Whitehead Information Technology, ensuring timely backup of data.
  • Coordinate ordering, billing, and other administrative tasks with the Administrative Lab Manager for Core Facilities.
  • Prepare yearly budget narrative, including use statistics and cost and billing evaluations.
  • Other items as advised by the faculty oversight or Whitehead administration.


Requirements

  • 5–7 years of experience working in a biomedical research laboratory preferred.
  • Exceptional understanding of quantitative methods in mass spectrometry, including instrument operation, sample preparation, and data analysis.
  • A working knowledge of design, theory, and functioning of instrumentation and how instrumentation can support research goals as put forth by users.
  • Drive and ability to stay current on, and apply advances in the field of quantitative proteomics that can enhance research locally, and support faculty, research staff, and students, by assisting and training them to carry out quantitative proteomics in support of their studies.
  • Must be flexible and demonstrate good skills in instruction and training.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer and record keeping skills for maintaining up-to-date facility databases, servers, and web site.
  • The ability to work independently under deadlines with minimal guidance, and to work as a team member.
  • Excellent administrative and operational skills.
