The Opportunity
This position works out of our Columbus, OH or Altavista, VA location in the Nutrition Division.
The primary responsibility is to provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for aseptic/retort processing and filling – including performing validations and revalidations, analyzing data, and writing FDA filings for the Abbott Nutrition network of aseptic/retort manufacturing lines
What You’ll Work On
- Perform validation and revalidations study design, execution, and reporting on retort or aseptic filling systems across the AN Commercial Plants.
- Has comprehensive knowledge in the area of thermal processing and either retort or aseptic processing filling operations.
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on technical matters related to aseptic processing, filling and aseptic design, establishing critical factors for an FDA filing and submitting filing documentation to the FDA (including electronic FDA filings).
- Responsible for keeping current with emerging technology and existing technologies.
- Provide technical support for trouble shooting and resolving process deviations for aseptic or retort operations.
Support to Commercial Operations
- Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the operation and critical factors associated with retort or aseptic filling technologies used within the Abbott Nutrition Network.
- Responsible for the detailed work necessary to collect appropriate data that would be used for calculating the delivered lethality, Spore Log Reduction (SLR) for microbial tests, or evaluation of the sterilization process.
- Develop and maintain retort or aseptic recipes for the Abbott Nutrition network.
- Write process recommendations for new products.
- Proficient in thermal lethality calculations.
New Product Innovation (NPI) - Support to Research and Development
- Troubleshoot retort or aseptic processing systems supporting R&D initiatives.
- Perform revalidations (study design, execution, and reporting) on retort or aseptic systems in the Pilot Plant (PP) and Process Research Center (PRC).
- Design and lead complex experiments, often with multiple variables, independently execute and/or direct others in the execution of project tasks by applying novel engineering theories, concepts and techniques.
Engineering - Technical and design support to new aseptic capital projects
- Independently lead a retort or an aseptic process design project team.
- Once trained, author and submit FDA filing documents.
Resolving Audit of FDA aseptic filing issues across the network
- Interface with senior management, external firms or agencies and coordinate technical matters between organizations.
- Understand and comply with applicable QA policies, procedures, rules and FDA regulations (21 CFR Part 113 and 114), Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), international regulations, and industry awareness.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU’LL BRING
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical or Food preferred) or Technical Field
- 5-10 years or work experience with a minimum of 5 years in retort or aseptic processing/filling
- Minimum of 5 years fluid processing experience
Preferred:
- Knowledge of thermal processing calculations (Fo, F150, F200) also preferred.
